Watch: Panthers coach Ron Rivera talks about plan for Cam Newton at training camp

All eyes are on Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s throwing shoulder on the eve of training camp. Newton began the 2018 season on a tear, matching or even outpacing many of his career-best numbers during his MVP season in 2015. After Newton’s shoulder was re-injured, his game fell off significantly and he eventually had to be shut down.

Cam has since undergone another surgery and has also unveiled some new throwing mechanics, designed to cut down on the stress on his joints and make him more accurate. Coach Ron Rivera had this to say to the media today when he was asked about the throwing plan for Newton over the next few weeks, per Steve Reed at the Associated Press.

Newton is entering his ninth year in the NFL. If he’s injured again this season, his replacement will be whoever wins the backup competition between rookie Will Grier and last year’s backups Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen.

The Panthers also recently worked out former AAF quarterback Luis Perez. If he signs, he’d likely be a camp body only.
