WATCH: Packers LB Oren Burks produces INT during training camp drill

It was only one play during a training camp practice in late July, but the Green Bay Packers must be happy to see second-year linebacker Oren Burks making standout plays.

During Friday’s practice, Olivia Reiner of PackersNews.com captured Burks playing smothering coverage on running back Aaron Jones and intercepting a short pass from DeShone Kizer in a one-on-one passing drill at Ray Nitschke Field.

Burks stuck close to Jones’ in-breaking route, got one arm inside to bat the ball in the air and made the interception before spiking the ball down in celebration.

Again, it’s only one play in a simple drill during a camp practice. But the Packers are banking on big things from Burks, a third-round pick from 2018 who is starting camp as a starter in the base defense next Blake Martinez, and any step forward is noteworthy.

The Packers could really use a jump from Burks in 2019. If he can provide the defense a three-down player with athleticism and coverage ability, Mike Pettine’s group could take a big step at inside linebacker. If not, the position could be in real trouble.

By all accounts, Burks is healthy and has enjoyed a strong offseason. More big plays during camp could provide the confidence he’ll need to make the jump in his second NFL season.
