Watch out Ayr United: Queen of the South striker Stephen Dobbie plans top-team return

He is up there alongside Dundee United's Lawrence Shankland as being the most feared marksman in the Championship.

Now Stephen Dobbie is preparing to pull his boots back on with Ayr United firmly in his sights.

The Queen of the South striker has been sidelined since July 20 with a small tear in his hamstring.

However, Doonhamers boss Allan Johnston expects to have the 36-year-old talisman fit for the trip to Somerset Park on Saturday, August 24.

Dobbie's return will be a huge boost for Queens who have opened their league campaign with two draws against Arbroath and Dunfermline Athletic.

Ayr kicked off with an opening-day win at home to Morton before losing narrowly to promotion hopefuls Dundee.

The availability of Dobbie could be supplemented with new signings as Johnston continues to try and beef up his threadbare Queens squad.

He said: "We're still short and we're looking to bring in a couple of players if possible. Obviously we need to wait and see about the loans market and see what happens there.

"We're looking for a wee bit of quality but that's hard to come by, especially with the budget that we've got.

"Stephen Dobbie will be back in a couple of weeks and I think then we will be a force to be reckoned with, especially going forward."
