While the annual tip lists continue to prove a successful method of projecting new talent, some new artists might prefer to have their music trickle into the public’s consciousness organically, rather than pummelled incessantly via Fern Cotton’s radio show for the next 12 months.
Twenty-something singer Niall Galvin – known artistically as Only Real – might fall into this category: a sneering, leering Jamie T-alike whose debut album, The Jerk at the End of the Line, is full of gobby musings and adolescent rebellion. It’s not exactly Crass, but it’s unlikely he’ll be scoring John Lewis ads anytime soon.
Ahead of his debut’s release on 30 March, the singer has unveiled the video for new single Yesterdays, which features Galvin’s fantasy universe, a world where egg yolks are blue, ducks lives in baths and young women wearing sombreros are ecstatically willing to dance around his back garden.
Yesterdays is released on 26 January. Watch the video and let us know what you make of it.
