WATCH: Oklahoma release fake depth chart going into opening season

Oklahoma opens the 2019 season against Houston this Sunday. The Sooners named Alabama transfer Jalen Hurts their starting quarterback during Week 0, so the biggest position battle in Norman is over.

Perhaps that is the reason there is no depth chart for Week 1, or maybe it is gamesmanship from Lincoln Riley. Either way, the game notes that the athletic department posted online and handed out hard copies of Monday do not include a depth chart.

Instead, there is a large eyes emoji and “coming soon,” on a page labeled “Depth chart.” Credit the Sooners’ sports information department with having fun with it at least.

Dana Holgorsen responded at his press conference Monday this way: “I’ve always released a depth chart, I’ll release one. Why they don’t put one out, it’s kind of silly to me. So, if they’re not putting one out, I ain’t putting one out. I guess I’ll put one out with those little funny eyes.”

In seriousness, the former West Virginia head coach explained that there may be positions on the field that have such close position battles that the Oklahoma coaching staff is unsure who will start at the end of the week.
