WATCH: Ohio State tight end Cade Stover’s mom gets the news of him being a captain for 2022

I have to admit, these types of videos get me every time because — well, I’m a sucker for hard work paying off. Add that to the fact that I have two kids of my own and I just can’t get enough of these.

I’m talking about those special phone calls where parents are a part of some pretty big news about their kids when it comes to making a lifelong dream happen in athletics. In this case, it was Ohio State tight end Cade Stover and his mom as the subject.

If you’ve been following the Buckeye football team during fall camp, we don’t have to tell you that this is going to be a pretty special and memorable season for Stover. That’s because he was voted one of six captains by the team for 2022. His mom, Chelsi, no doubt knows all about it now, but someone had to break the news to her originally.

And that’s exactly what Ohio State offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Kevin Wilson did before everyone else heard the news. With Stover close by for the phone call, Wilson gave mom a call to let her know the special news.

As any parent of a big-time football player can attest, getting a phone call from one of the OSU coaches can sometimes be a nervous moment because of injuries and all, and you can kind of hear it in her voice initially, but that turned to joy once she understood that her son was going to be the part of a select few in the history of the Buckeye football program.

Watch the call and reaction below.

I hope OSU shares more of these. All the plays and recognition on the field are great, but seeing the behind-the-scenes of the family members swelling with pride is something I’m always here for.
