Today was an important moment in Ohio State history. It was another commencement for the 2020 graduating class, but one done virtually because of the current COVID-19 pandemic. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t without its special moments.
All told, almost 13,000 (12,967 to be exact) received their degrees Sunday — the largest commencement ever at Ohio State. Despite Ohio Stadium being empty, the event was not short on pomp and circumstance. There were addresses from key leaders and figures of the University, stirring videos, and other touching moments.
But one of those sentimental videos was shared by Ohio State via its official Twitter profile just after the ceremony.
You can watch it for yourself by clicking the video below, with the transcript to follow underneath the video. It is a truly extraordinary time during this crazy pandemic, but it’s also a historic time for almost 13,000 people ready to go out and take on the world.

To the class of 2020:
“Your path to becoming a Buckeye is paved with 150 years of tradition. The sound of Orton chimes, walks with friends across campus, reflective moments at mirror lake. Traditions like touching Oxley’s head, meeting new friends during welcome week, the incredible sense of pride of beating That Team Up North year after year. While this year commencement is different, this is your special moment. What’s important is that you’re sharing it with the people you care about. Today’s celebration brings a deeper meaning to how firm thy friendship, a tie that binds and cannot be broken by distance. Your hard work, your accomplishments, and the impact you’ve already made reminds us what it means to be a Buckeye. You have the courage to say what isn’t being said, and do what isn’t being done. You give voice to those not heard, and champion others in ways that raise them up. You put your creativity and perspectives out there for the world to see. With the confidence that anything — and everything — is possible. Your potential cannot be diminished as you continue to call O-H-I-O! Your boldness and compassion will be an unforgettable part of history — together as Buckeyes — now and forever.”
