Watch: Nostalgic footage captures North West 200 from over 60 years ago

Today, May 10, marks the first day that the North West 200 would have taken place along the north coast.

The event, which holds the title of Ireland's largest outdoor sporting event, was meant to take place throughout the week, up until May 16, and it was estimated to have attracted over 100,000 visitors from all over the world.

Due to measures to stop the spread of Coronavirus, however, the 2020 edition of the NW200 was been cancelled cancelled back in March.

In a statement released at the time, organisers said: "Given the current concerns and restrictions around the Coronavirus public health crisis, the organisers of the 2020 fonaCAB and Nicholl Oils North West 200 will postpone the May 10-16 Race Week.

"[This] decision has been based upon the advice and guidance received. Our paramount desire is to act responsibly and do all we can to protect everyone from the threat posed by the virus."

While the event might be cancelled, Northern Ireland Screen have marked the occasion by sharing decades-old footage of the North West 200 when it was still in its relatively early days.

The clip above was filmed in 1957 (and doesn't features sound - so no need to turn your speakers up!), and shows how competitors had to use push-starts in order to get going.

NI Screen said: "The infamous North West 200, a date marked in the calendar for many was to begin today. So, to try and fill the void, we reminisce with footage from 1957. The riders began quite differently back then, with a manic push-start to get the race underway.
