Watch: Northern Ireland's role in WW2 effort shown in archive footage for VE Day

Northern Ireland's role in the WW2 effort has been brought to life in archive footage, which shows how the country's industrial sector rallied together to produce materials and clothing for troops.

The footage, which was provided by Northern Ireland Screen and is from their Digital Film Archive, comes as Europe commemorates the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) marks the end of fighting in Europe during World War 2. Commemorations for the day take place each year on May 8.

The above clip, titled 'Ulster at Arms', shows how the manufacturing work force in Northern Ireland - heavily based around the linen industry - helped to produce everything from uniforms to parachutes for the Allied troops.

The clip's narrator says: "The linen of Ulster is justly world famous. This flax spinning mill, like many others, is now manufacturing parachutes.

"Every airman who is safely bailed out, owes their lives to deft fingers of these girls."

The clip explores how, even though these workers weren't on the frontline during the war, their role in the overall war effort was indispensible. The narrator comments: "The flax of Ulster is saving the lives of men who fight the Luftwaffe."

Commenting on the footage, Northern Ireland Screen said: "Today marks the 75th anniversary of victory in Europe. In this clip from our Digital Film Archive, we look back at the significant role Northern Ireland had to play in WWII in the factories throughout the war efforts.
