Watch Nicola Sturgeon put Boris Johnson in his place on the steps of Bute House in Edinburgh

When new Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in Edinburgh yesterday (29 July), he was greeted by a sea of protesters who serenaded him with boos as he arrived at the First Minister's official residence in the New Town.

You can watch a video of the reaction on our Facebook page - originally filmed live.

However, in an far more unexpected twist, he also appeared to get the cold shoulder from Nicola Sturgeon herself, as she brushed off his attempt to take the lead on the steps of Bute House.

Boris Johnson appears to reach out and try to usher her into the building after their initial greeting, but she hangs back and appears to refuse to allow him to carry out the paternalistic gesture, making him walk in front of her instead.

After his 'telling off' Johnson can then be seen putting his arm down before walking into the building ahead of her.

The 'last one through the door' moment is a common point of conflict between leaders, as whoever enters last is often viewed as the more dominant party.

In 2000, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak were invited by American president Bill Clinton to Camp David for peace process negociations.

Arafat and Barak famously jostled for position as cameras filmed them walking through the door, with neither prepared to be ushered in by the other.

A similar, if rather more subdued, power play was potentially going on between Johnson and Sturgeon yesterday.

At the same time, independence campaigners and pro-EU protesters gathered outside ahead of his arrival.

Johnson did not speak to the public or press at Bute House.

In a tense one-hour meeting, Sturgeon and Johnson clashed on Brexit, IndyRef2 and Tory policy.

It came hours after Johnson visited the UK’s nuclear sub base in Scotland – staying far away from the public and any protest.

Johnson also had a private meeting with Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson after ignoring her advice on Europe and sacking her close ally David Mundell from the Scotland Office.
