There is “no real timetable,” for Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s return to the football field according to head coach Nick Saban.
Saban said during his Monday press conference that the QB’s surgery was successful and that he hopes to see Tagovailoa in an active rehab within 10 days.
The junior left the second quarter of Saturday’s 35-13 win versus Tennessee with a high ankle sprain to his right ankle and had “tightrope” surgery Sunday. Saban pointed out that the injury is the same type as what Tagovailoa suffered last December during the 2018 SEC Championship, but last season was Tua’s left ankle.
Last season’s Heisman Trophy runner-up will not play in No. 1 Bama’s (7-0, 4-0 SEC) home game versus Arkansas (2-5, 0-4 SEC) Saturday. The following week, Alabama has a bye week.
No. 3 LSU (7-0, 3-0 SEC) visits the Tide on Nov. 9. Alabama linebacker Terrell Lewis told reporters postgame Saturday that the quarterback vowed after the injury that he would play in the game versus the Tigers.
“He said, ‘I’ll be back for LSU,’” Lewis said, according to 247 Sports. “I know how Tua is. It’s something he’s been through before, so I don’t doubt the fact that he’s a competitor. He’s going to get right back, and he’ll be fine.”
Tagovailoa played in his team’s College Football Playoff semifinal versus Oklahoma on Dec. 29 of last year after suffering his left ankle sprain on Dec. 1.
