The NFL playoff field could expand from 12 teams to 14. That’s per NFL.com as the league continues its discussions around its collective bargaining agreement.
Team owners and players have “expressed an openness” in expanding the playoff field as a way to offset revenue lost by — potentially — shortening the preseason. That’s another measure being discussed in these meetings, which would take the preseason from four games to three. But, according to the report, the preseason may still be shortened even if the league does not add to the playoff slate.
The NFL’s current CBA expires in March 2021. Per NFL.com, it remains “unlikely” that a deal will be reached before the 2019 season kicks off Sept. 5.
