WATCH: NFL bans pyrotechnics on field following chaos at Nissan Stadium

The NFL has banned pyrotechnics on the field following a machine malfunction that resulted in a fireball at Nissan Stadium in Nashville in Week 2.

A league spokesperson told The Associated Press that the matter is being reviewed and that no such “flame effects,” will be allowed at least until the review is done.

The Tennessee Titans (1-1) honored Steve McNair and Eddie George to ceremoniously retire their jerseys Sunday. Shortly after the former player and former player family introductions, and about five minutes before kickoff, a machine sitting in the endzone near the tunnel burst into flames.

There was no one standing near the machine when it erupted and workers were able to extinguish the flames while George’s wife Taj sang the National Anthem.

”Following the pregame introductions today, there was a mechanical failure by one of the pyrotechnic devices which resulted in a fire,” the Titans said in a statement Sunday. “The vendor will be required by the state of Tennessee to undergo an inspection for the defective device and the others that were used to determine the final cause. The field staff acted quickly to extinguish the fire, which resulted in no injuries and minor field damage.”
