Watch Newcastle United fans erupt in The Strawberry as Sunderland lose play-off final to Charlton

This is the moment Newcastle United fans in a famous city pub saw rivals Sunderland defeated at Wembley.

The Strawberry erupted as Charlton Athletic ended the Black Cats' promotion dream with a goal during the final moments of the League One play-off final.

Cheers echoed around the famous pub, near St James' Park , as agony for Sunderland fans became ecstasy for the Toon Army .

And in the video above, drinkers could be seen jumping up and down at delight as Sunderland's dream of promotion ended when Patrick Bauer hit the back of the net in the 94th minute.

It was Sunderland’s second Wembley defeat of the season following their EFL Trophy penalty shootout agony against Portsmouth.

But today's defeat means Jack Ross’ side must play third tier football for a second successive season – the first time the Black Cats have done so in the club’s 140-year history.
