Watch: Newcastle goal hero Matty Longstaff was firing in wonder strikes way back in 2015

Newcastle United's Matty Longstaff announced himself to the footballing world on Sunday with the stunning matchwinner in the 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

It was a sensational way to mark his Premier League debut - but it shoudn't have come as too much of a surprise to Magpies fans.

For Longstaff, who lined up in the United midfield alongside brother Sean last weekend, had been making headlines with sensational strikes for some time now.

Back in 2015, we reported how a then 16-year-old Matty had made himself an internet hit after scoring a spectacular strike against Middlesbrough.

Longstaff stole the show with a wonderful goal in a 2-1 win against the Teessiders in an Academy clash.

Those gathered on the sidelines were left open-mouthed as the youngster chested the ball down and slammed home into the top corner with the Boro goalkeeper left rooted to the spot.

And now he can add David de Gea to the list of goalkeeper he has left helpless, with a full St James' Park roaring their approval after his goal against Manchester United.

Speaking after the game, the former North Shields Juniors man said: “It was hit and hope and rather than a placed shot but it’s in the back of the net.

“You can’t describe the feeling, running away to the fans, it was surreal.

“I thought my first half shot was in but it hit the bar. That was a bit disappointing but to get the goal front of the Gallowgate End, it’s that little bit special.”
