Watch: Motorsport takes a ride in the MotoGP safety car

The MotoGP safety car is a crucial part of a race weekend. Responsible for nullifying a race and dictating the speeds of the riders, it is also usually the first response vehicle on site whenever there is a crash and can provide any necessary assistance.

There are other tasks too, including inspecting the track on sighting laps, and assessing the risks posed to riders in all conditions.

At the British MotoGP at Silverstone, Motorsport.com caught up with safety car driver Mike Lafuente to talk through his job and the incredible BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car that he drives.

BMW's M division has provided the fleet of high-performance safety cars for the premier class of motorcycle racing since 1999, and this year’s version is the most-powerful of the lot.

The car's M Hybrid system combines a high-revving V8 engine with two turbochargers and an electric motor to deliver the power, which is transmitted to the track via an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel drive. Numerous other technologies from M division ensure perfect driving dynamics in all conditions.

On board are a host of medical supplies and equipment should they be required in an emergency.
We talk through all the details and take a hot-lap onboard the BMW M5 around the Silverstone circuit.
