The crook is seen walking into the store covering his face with a sleeping bag, before demanding money from the shopkeeper.

The 82-year-old then repeatedly strikes the thief with her walking stick before she gets knocked to the floor.

Mountford made off with £50 and a packet of cigarettes from the shop, while the lady suffered bruising to her face.

The fearless woman was awarded £250 from the High Sheriff for her bravery.

Mountford, who is already serving a four-and-a-half year prison sentence, has now been locked up for two additional years.

Aaron Mountford, 28, pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court (Staffordshire Police)

He pleaded guilty to the robbery and was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on February 7.

Detective Constable Simon Chawner, from force CID, said: “This was a violent and aggressive attack on a vulnerable elderly woman for the sake of stealing just £50 in cash.

“Although we don’t recommend that people take matters into their own hands, the actions of the woman in this case were brave and selfless.

“We’re glad that Mountford has now been sentenced.”
