Watch moment mysterious fireball exploded in the sky in incredible doorbell camera footage

A doorbell camera captured the incredible moment a fireball exploded in the sky.

The astronomical phenomenon was caught on a doorbell security camera and seen by neighbours in the Derby area.

Gary Rogers, 52, was lying in bed when he got a notification on his phone alerting him to movement outside his home, reports Derbyshire Live

When Mr Rogers checked the footage, which was caught at around 11.35pm on Monday, he was shocked to see a massive fireball light up the sky.

He told Derbyshire Live: "I was sitting in bed about to go to sleep and my phone pinged. I couldn’t believe it.

"I thought it was a firework at first, but I listened to the sound and you couldn’t hear any noise.

"I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. I thought, ‘what is that?’

"Some of my friends said it looked like a meteor.

"I was really surprised. I have never seen a meteor before, only shooting stars.

"I thought it’s definitely not a firework, I had never seen a firework light up the horizon like that."

A spokesperson for the Royal Astronomical Society said: "From the picture it looks like a 'fireball' - an unusually bright meteor - though that doesn't mean anything reached the ground.

"It's a fairly rare and spectacular sight though, so those witnessing it should consider themselves lucky!"

A meteor is a space rock that enters Earth's atmosphere.

As it falls toward Earth, the resistance, or drag, of the air on the rock makes it extremely hot.
