Watch moment 77-year-old throws punches at would-be robber at a cash machine

This is the moment a brave pensioner fought off a would-be robber at a Sainsbury's cash machine.

The 77-year-old was caught on camera getting into a fist fight with the masked crook, seconds after he took cash out of the machine.

The elderly man was using the machine at around 6am on February 5 outside the Sainsbury's on Colchester Avenue, Cardiff, when the would-be thief approached him.

The man, who is described by police as white, demanded the pensioner hand over his cash and bank card.

After fending him off and throwing a few punches, the criminal made off empty-handed.

The CCTV shows the suspect walking into the car park and police say he is not connected to the van seen in the footage.

Police have released the footage in an appeal for any information on the brazen thief.

Detective Constable Stephen Mayne said: "The victim in this case showed great bravery, however, he has been left shaken.

"We would encourage anyone who knows (the suspect) to please come forward."

The would-be thief was carrying a black rucksack and was wearing a high-vis vest and black hat with a white motif on the front.
