P.J. Fleck isn’t going to leave Minnesota any time soon.
The third-year head coach of the Golden Gophers agreed to a seven-year contract extension with the university, the school announced Tuesday. The team is ranked in the Top 15 at 8-0, having won 10 straight games dating back to last season.
“He recruits at an extremely high level and the program is seeing success it has not seen in nearly 80 years,” Minnesota Athletics Director Mark Coyle said in the school’s release. “His students are succeeding off the field, as the team has posted a record GPA and continually gives back to the community. I am thankful to President Gabel and the Board of Regents for their continued support, and I look forward to Coach Fleck continuing to lead this program.”
Fleck transitioned from coaching in the NFL and returned to coaching college when he took over the head coach at Western Michigan in 2013. He is 20-13 at Minnesota but is 12-2 in his last 14 games.
The extension gives Fleck a one million dollar raise for next season, according to ESPN, and raises his buyout to $10 million after this season. That buyout drops to $4.5 million next season and to $3 million in 2021 and 2022.
