WATCH: Mike Krzyzewski to coach his grandson as a Duke walk-on this upcoming season

Duke men’s basketball refers to its program as a “brotherhood,” and this coming season, the Blue Devils will have a strong family connection on the court.

Michael Savarino, a 6-foot guard out of Durham Academy in North Carolina, will be walking onto the Blue Devils’ squad to be coached by his grandfather, Mike Krzyzewski. Suiting up for Coach K is what Savarino called a “dream for me my whole life.”

Krzyzewski says Savarino likely would have played Division-II basketball if he hadn’t walked on at Duke, but also said his grandson deserves the opportunity.

“He wanted to come to Duke and I was happy about that because he earned it, and if he’s coming to Duke, then he should be a part of our basketball program because he’s good enough to be a walk-on.”
