WATCH: Mets fire manager Mickey Callaway

The New York Mets have fired manager Mickey Callaway after just two seasons with the club.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen made the following statement in a release from the team on Thursday:

“We want to thank Mickey for his consistent work ethic and dedication over the last two seasons and I’m certain these characteristics will serve him well in his next opportunity. A decision like this is never easy, however, we believe it is in the best interest of the franchise at this time.”

The Mets went 86-76 this season — right around where they were projected to finish — and were three games shy of a Wild Card appearance.

Callaway is the fifth Major League manager to be fired following the 2019 season. Retirements in San Francisco and Kansas City make it seven managerial openings heading into the offseason.
