It looks like a holdout is on the horizon for Melvin Gordon and the Los Angeles Chargers.
His agent, Fletcher Smith, told ESPN that the running back will not be reporting to Chargers training camp in late July and that he will demand a trade if the team does not give him a contract extension.
Gordon is entering the final season of his rookie deal, a fifth-year option worth $5.6 million. His average annual salary ranks 26th among NFL running backs and, per the report, Gordon is not willing to accept an offer that doesn’t put him near the top of the league.
The Rams’ Todd Gurley and the Jets’ Le’Veon Bell are the highest-paid running backs in the NFL right now, averaging $14.3 million and $13.1 million per year, respectively.
Gordon averaged 5.1 yards per attempt and scored 14 touchdowns with the Bolts last season.
