Despite their history as of late in terms of wins and losses, the Jacksonville Jaguars have had some solid players to suit up in black and teal. Former running back Maurice Jones-Drew certainly belongs at the top of that list as he established himself as one of the league’s top running backs during his time in Duval.
In reflecting back on his career which was full of highlights, there was one particular play that many would say is in his top five — and it was a play in which he wasn’t even the ball carrier. If you guessed it was his infamous block on former San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawn Merriman, you would be right.
In a recent episode of Daniel Jeremiah’s “Moving the Sticks” podcast, Jones-Drew was asked to breakdown the play and, of course, he was more than happy to do so.
In a nutshell, MJD told Jeremiah that the Jags came at Merriman in a variety of ways during the series from crackback blocks, to using their fullbacks and they even used some double teams, which made it difficult to gauge exactly what was coming. That said, during the scoring play of the drive the Jags allowed Merriman to come in for a one-on-one block with Jones-Drew. Understanding the size disadvantage, Merriman assumed Jones-Drew was going to go low which opened himself up — and boy was that a mistake.
With the Jags having their 25th anniversary Jones-Drew will definitely be a part of their festivities. That means we’ll certainly be seeing his highlight hit on Merriman more down the road, which is certainly fine by the accounts of Jags fans.
