Watch: Massive smoke cloud emerges from Dublin high rise fire

A fire has engulfed a high rise building in Tallaght as the building was evacuated and roads were closed by Gardai.

Emergency services attended the scene of the fire in Belgard Square and tried to put put out the blaze.

Dublin Fire Brigade have sent eight units in an attempt to control the flames.

Ruth Abbott, who was an eye witness of the fire, told Dublin Live that the flames appeared to be "spreading".

She said: "It looks like it is actually spreading to the next building again. I can see flames but I can't tell if they are coming through a window or if it has spread to the next building."

"I was looking out the window and it all just went poof upwards. People started evacuating out along the Luas stop."

However, Ms Abbott added that the blaze appears to be under more control than it was previously.

She said: "There are a good few ambulances and fire brigades here and the Guards are obviously trying to keep everyone back. From where I am standing, it looks like it is a lot more under control than it was. It has been burning for a while now."

"They have closed all the roads around it now and it looks like the Luas has stopped. The road up to Tallaght Hospital is also closed.

Dublin Fire Brigade urged the public to avoid driving into the area so there is space for emergency vehicles.

They wrote: "Eight units are currently attending a high rise building fire in Belgard Square. Three ambulances are also on scene

"Please keep clear of the area to allow emergency vehicles access."

A spokesperson for the Gardai said: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fire at a business premises in Tallaght, Dublin 24. Dublin Fire Brigade are also at the scene.

"Gardaí were alerted to the incident at approximately 4.20pm. A cordon has been put in place and traffic diversions are in operation."

Luas tram services between Belgard and Tallaght are back in operation after Dublin Fire Brigade requested they be halted while they deal with the fire.

Dublin Live will post all the latest information on the blaze as we get it.
