Watch: Lions ‘Under the Helmet’ series returns featuring Romeo Okwara

The Detroit Lions Michigan Emmy winning documentary series “Under the Helmet” returns for the 2019 season.

Led by Dustyn Blindert (Senior New Media Producer) and Eamonn Reynolds (Director of Football Communications), the series takes a look a players lives off the field and gives fans a unique perspective on who the players are as individuals.

First up for the 2019 season: Romeo Okwara.

The video opens with the clicking of typewriter keys setting the stage for Okwara’s interest in “analog things”. The monologue shifts to music, guitar playing and, of course, Okwara’s record collection.

The video then transitions into Okwara’s experiences as a youth, spending the first decade of his life growing up in Lagos, Nigeria. This leads to the values his parents instilled in him, such as respecting elders, working hard and prioritizing academics.

Okwara then begins discussing his football journey, from trying out as a wide receiver in seventh grade, to switching to defense and eventually giving him the opportunity to attend Notre Dame.

The video closes with Okwara’s passion for photography, how it’s led him to appreciate life and enjoy the time he gets to spend with different people.
