WATCH: Leeds train station transformed as transparent roof and gold panels installed

The multi-million pound works to transform Leeds train station are almost complete - and the new transparent roof has finally been installed.

Our video above reveals the drastic changes that are beginning to take shape at the station, which is the busiest in the north of England.

Eagle-eyed commuters may remember that the low roof in the main concourse used to be wooden, making it dark and dingy inside. That was exacerbated throughout the duration of the works, with scaffolding and big pillars crowding the station.

That's all a thing of the past now though, with a see-through roof meaning the station is completely unrecognisable.

It's made from a type of plastic called Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) - the same material that forms the huge domes of the Eden Project in Cornwall.

New ticket barriers have also been installed with the aim of getting more commuters through the station in less time.

The area outside the station's main entrance on New Station Street has been widened all the way down to the Queen's Hotel too, which makes it more pedestrian friendly.

The cosmetic work to the station is part of a wider £161 million revamp, which will see a new platform installed by 2021.
