Watch Leeds street's moving tribute to the fallen on a misty Remembrance Sunday

At 11am on a misty Remembrance Sunday, Leeds musicians paid an emotional tribute to the fallen.

Meanwood residents socially distanced around Church Lane today as Howard Naylor, 57, and Sharon Swales played The Last Post on the trumpet.

The heartwarming duet was performed on the streets after people were asked to pay their respects home this year.

Howard who has played the trumpet since he was seven years old said he has done this every year to mark Remembrance Day.

Howard and Sharon who live only yards away from each met during the first lockdown when neighbours came out to clap for carers on Thursday evenings.

As they are both trumpet players they decided to come together and play as a duet.

Howard, who plays for the Otley Band, said: “It’s difficult playing something as a duet but I think it worked well. Sharon is a fantastic player.

“I enjoyed doing it. I’ve played for 50 years and I wasn’t not going to do it this year, it's only right. I’m sure in the community of Meanwood they’re many people who will have family and friends who are in the armed forces or were in the army.

“I could hear someone else in the distance playing the Last Post as we were playing.

“I’ve seen trombone players as well. It’s being played on different instruments than the normal ones to help the country commemorate when it's been made difficult by the virus.

“The guy who taught me the trumpet, Robert Hardy, was a guest of the Japanese, he was a prisoner of war working on the Burma Railway. He had it hard in the war but he taught me how to play.

“He was a stickler for rules but he was a lovely man.

“The Last Post is very moving for a lot of people. It’s difficult to play, technically it’s easy but it’s difficult because it’s so poignant. Everyone is listening.”

Local residents have praised the pair for their moving performance with some commenting: “That was beautiful and very poignant in the mist.”

Another person added: “Beautiful, I have tears in my eyes listening to such a beautiful tribute.”
