Head coach Ron Rivera will start quarterback Kyle Allen again for the Panthers (4-2) Sunday as they visit the 49ers (6-0) in San Francisco.
“Cam (Newton) is going to continue his rehab,” Rivera said, according to the team’s website. “As I told you guys last week, we’re not putting any pressure on Cam. He’s done a great job doing the things that we’ve asked of him. He’s gone above and beyond in terms of working with our quarterbacks and helping them along the way. He’s just going to continue to do his program.”
Allen took over at QB for Carolina starting Week 3 after Newton’s injury. The 23-year-old is 4-0 in four starts. Allen has thrown seven touchdowns and no interceptions for 901 passing yards this season.
The season starter, Newton, is rehabbing a Lisfranc injury which he suffered in the team’s Week 2 Thursday night game versus the Buccaneers. In two starts, the 30-year-old passed for 572 yards. Newton threw one pick and no touchdowns before being sidelined with an injury.
