Watch killer trying to get away with murder by lying to police about how Scott Patterson was stabbed

This is the moment killer Peter Dodds started trying to get away with murder by lying to police.

Dodds had stuck a kitchen knife into the chest of Scott Patterson up to the hilt and it had passed through his lung, heart and two major arteries.

A pathologist said the wound was around 13cm deep, passed downwards, inwards and backwards and would have required at least moderate force.

But, as this video shows, Dodds told police he lashed out in a rounded motion, claiming he did not intend to stab Scott.

Home Office pathologist Dr Jennifer Bolton told jurors the wound she found in Scott's chest was not likely to have been caused by the motion Dodds suggested.

She said, assuming both men were standing up, such a movement was not consistent with the injury, given the fact it moved downwards and Scott was around two inches taller than Dodds.

However, under cross-examination, she conceded it is not known what angle the two men were at or how they were moving or how the knife was held.

Prosecutors said Dodds was acting with "murderous intent" when he knifed Scott at a house in Blyth after injuring his partner, Danielle Sanderson, by lashing out with a knife.

Following the conviction for murder, Detective Superintendent Helen Anderson of Northumbria Police said: “This has been a tragic case and my thoughts remain with Ms Sanderson and the wider Patterson family during what has been a devastating time for them.

“On the night of his death, Scott and Danielle had been out celebrating the birth of their three week old baby – he was not looking for a fight, he was not aggressive in any way and made it clear to Dodds he was not going to rise to his aggressive remarks.

“Dodds was a violent man who made his intentions perfectly clear. When he didn’t get what he wanted, he continued antagonising people and even armed himself with a knife.

"I’m pleased the jury saw him for what he really is and hope this conviction can bring some comfort to Scott’s family.”

Dodds 34, of The Greenway, Uxbridge, London, will be sentenced for murdering 30-year-old Scott and assaulting Danielle, on Wednesday morning.
