Kentucky Derby winner Country House will not run in the Preakness May 18, it was reported Tuesday. Country Hour trainer Bill Mott told The Daily Racing Form that the horse is coughing and “acting like he is sick.” Country House’s absence eliminates the possibility of a Triple Crown winner and the official Derby winner joins Maximum Security, who finished first before being disqualified, in sitting out the race in Baltimore, Maryland. The last Kentucky Derby winner to not run in the Preakness was back in 1996 when Grindstone retired five days after winning the Derby because of a knee injury.
