
Stephen Colbert kicked off the musical segment of his new Late Show right last night, inviting on Kendrick Lamar who gave another intense and inventive performance.
K-Dot’s so good in a studio setting (see ‘These Walls’ on Ellen) and always puts in a huge amount of effort, re-working tracks and even improving on them rather than just reproducing them the way they are on the record.
He kicked off the medley with a staccato version of ‘Wesley Theory’s’, moved on to ‘Momma’, spit a new bridge into ‘King Kunta’ and then ended the mini-set with a climactic version of ‘u’.
To Pimp A Butterfly is such a complex, sprawling album that it will have crazy longevity, but Kendrick already has ideas for a new album.
"I know exactly what I want to say next," he told the Guardian recently.
"Everything is going to make sense – not only to myself but to anybody who wants to understand life and music. Everything will make a little more sense."
