After Syracuse basketball’s season-opening loss to defending national champion Virginia on Wednesday night, Orange coach Jim Boeheim called out the ACC for the brutal 48-34 result.
“You never want to play the elite games early,” he said. “That’s stupid. It’s just a money grab.”
The ACC is playing a 20-game conference schedule for the first time this season, which includes seven league matchups to start the regular season. Duke is the only ACC team that has not yet played a conference game.
“I just don’t think it’s good,” he continued. “I don’t think it’s smart. You want to build up to the league — the league’s the most important thing so why would you play the first game of the year in the league? Makes no sense to me, but that’s just what happens when you go to 20 games and somebody wants you to play early.”
His team’s 34 points against the Cavaliers became the program’s lowest-scoring game since 1948, hence the obvious frustration.
