WATCH: Jill Ellis steps down after back-to-back Women’s World Cup titles

Not even a month after leading the U.S. women’s national team to back-to-back Women’s World Cup titles, head coach Jill Ellis is stepping down.

U.S. Soccer announced the news on Tuesday, one day before her contract was set to expire. Ellis reportedly had the option to stay on one more year to coach Team USA in the 2020 Olympics but chose not to.

Ellis, at 52 years old, leaves the program with a 102-7-18 record and is the second coach in the world – men’s or women’s – to win two World Cups. She was named the USWNT head coach in 2014 after serving as the interim head coach twice before.

From the U.S. Soccer release:

“The opportunity to coach this team and work with these amazing women has been the honor of a lifetime,” Ellis said. “I want to thank and praise them for their commitment and passion to not only win championships but also raise the profile of this sport globally while being an inspiration to those who will follow them.”
