Jets quarterback Sam Darnold was listed as “did not practice,” on Wednesday’s official release. Before practice, head coach Adam Gase said that the QB would participate in individual drills and 7-on-7, then the staff would make a decision on if the QB could participate in full team practice.
Darnold’s inactivity follows the 22-year-old having a ripped toenail removed. He suffered the toe injury during Monday’s 33-0 loss to the Patriots (7-0).
Monday’s game was the second consecutive game that the Jets (1-5) had their quarterback on the field for the first time this season after a month-long battle with mononucleosis. Darnold played in Week 1, then missed Weeks 2-5 (including the team’s bye week).
Darnold returned to the field for New York for Week 6, leading the team to its first win of the year. Versus the Pats, the 2018 third overall NFL Draft pick played the worst game of his NFL career, completing 11 of 32 pass attempts for 86 yards and no touchdowns. Darnold turned the ball over five times Monday, throwing four interceptions and fumbling for loss once.
Gase said before Wednesday’s practice that he believed Darnold will be able to play versus the Jaguars (3-4) in Jacksonville Sunday.
