The Cowboys scored a season-high 47 points in their 2019 finale versus the Redskins Sunday, but that of course by no means offsets the very real need that team owner Jerry Jones feels to make a switch.
While the 77-year-old is not finishing the season by denouncing Jason Garrett as head coach, postgame Sunday he said simply, “I’ve made changes. And I can see myself making a lot of changes — in a lot of areas. The times call for that. I am about change.”
The win over Washington pushed the final 2019 record to 8-8, but .500 wasn’t good enough this season. It is Garrett’s 10th as head coach, and Dallas holds a mediocre 2-3 playoff record in that decade.
Sunday was the final game on the 53-year-old’s current contract. Many outlets (including Yahoo! and CBS Sports) report that the expectation is that Jones will allow that contract to simply expire this week without an extension.
The time after the final game of the season, though, included Jones praising Garrett a fair amount for the positive that Garrett brought to Jones’ organization.
Jones, though, made it quite clear he wasn’t tipping his hand on the coach’s future in Dallas, saying “There’s no door shut here, tonight,” and adding that he, “Wouldn’t do that here.”
