WATCH: Jaylen Brown’s talk at the Berkeley Forum on sports and education

A new video for a talk given by Boston Celtics All-Star forward Jaylen Brown asks a series of important, related questions as a point of departure. “How do institutionalized sports act as both an opponent and an agent of social control?” we are asked. “In what ways does social stratification occur within both education and sports? Why are athletics and intellectualism viewed as mutually exclusive, particularly among Black athletes?”

In the video, Brown addresses these questions from his own perspective as well as the works of renowned intellectuals, weaving the two together for an engaging and at times tough to listen to talk due to his graphic discussion of police brutality.

Give the clip embedded below a listen to hear Brown’s talk at Cal-Berkeley — his alma mater — and be prepared to take notes. There’s a lot going on and this is one talk you don’t want to miss.
