Irish performer wins Grand Prize at the 2019 K-POP World Festival in South Korea

A Dublin-based man has rocked the world of K-Pop recently by taking home the crown for Ireland at the annual K-POP World Festival in Changwon, South Korea.

Sodem Solana, 23, from James St. Dublin, performed in front of over 30,000 in Changwon to beat over 6400 other contestants from around the world.

The star performed the song 'Solo' by Jennie and was a huge hit with the audience of K-Pop fans not only in South Korea, but across the globe.

This was the 9th annual KPOP World Festival and Sodem becomes only the second Irish contestant to achieve such a feat.

K-Pop is a genre of music which originates from South Korea.

This style of music started to grow in popularity since the early 2000's and has quickly became a worldwide phenomenon thanks to hit groups such as BTS, PSY, Girls' Generation and an ever-growing number of others.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Sodem said: "I hope this victory will bring more recognition of the ever-growing K-Pop industry to Ireland.

"I'm happy that Ireland is starting to be recognised as a presence in the world of K-Pop."

Solana pocketed a whopping 10,000,000 South Korean Won, which is the equivalent of €7,711 and is hoping that this is just the beginning of his K-Pop journey.

With two wins in the nine-year history of the contest, Ireland has now become the most successful country ever at the KPOP World Festival.
