Watch: Irish father and son march through Athlone for St Patrick's Day in two-man parade

They had no St Patrick’s Day parade to march in... but that wasn’t stopping David Kelly and his son Owen.

Soldier David and his eight-year-old lad are members of Athlone Pipe Band in Co Westmeath, but they refused to let
the health crisis ruin their celebration of our national day.

A touching video of the pair marching down Talbot Avenue in the town - David on pipes and Owen on drums - was shared by David’s fiancée Louise Kaye.

Louise’s sister Diane said yesterday: “They would have been in the parade so they just did their own thing instead.

"Owen has been in the band for about five years.

"He was delighted to get out and about.”

Families and revellers have been participating in a 'virtual parade' this St Patrick's day as parades up and down the country were shut down.

Families paraded around their home dressed as the patron saint of Ireland and played musical instruments while obeying the social distancing rules put in place by authorities.

Musicians were spotted playing traditional instruments outside their homes as neighbours celebrated the festivities in their own way during the current global coronavirus pandemic.
