Watch incredible moment kids come face to face with minke whale

These Cork kids got the fright of their lives this week after a whale breached right at the side of their boat.

Thrilling footage has emerged showing a minke coming up from nowhere off the coast of Castletownbere - and the beast's shock breach would be enough to scare the living daylights out of anyone.

The surprise and shock of all aboard the small fishing boat is incredible to see as the whale snaps its mouth shut.

The video was taken by Castletownbere local David Minihane who had his three kids and another friend's daughter on board at the time.

Speaking to CorkBeo, he said they'd regularly go out on the boat and are well used to the ocean's residents - but that this incident was truly one to remember.

The whale can be seen breaching within a few feet of the vessel before yelps can be heard from the dazed passengers.

Cameraman Dave is also shaken a bit as the mink's splashes water all over them before they gather their bearings and begin to laugh.

He said: "We'd regularly see dolphins, they're always up by the boat within touching distance. We see the wales about six or seven miles out but we've never been that close. They usually stay away."

Minke whales tend to weigh just over six tons and are about 5.5m in length - they're about twice the size of the boat David was in.

A moment the kids will never forget.
