Watch hundreds of guillemots taking flight over the Farne Islands - in slow motion

This is the spectacular sight of hundreds of guillemots taking flight off the Northumberland coast.

Andrew Douglas, skipper of Serenity II, captured the footage of the flock taking flight in all directions from a cliff on the Farne Islands.

Guillemots, collectively known as a bazaar, are one of more than 25 nesting bird species found on the Farne Islands.

It is estimated that over 100,000 individual birds inhabit the islands, including more than 35,000 pairs of puffins.

But diverse and plentiful birdlife is not the only draw of the Farne Islands for wildlife enthusiasts, as they are home to one of the largest colonies of Atlantic grey seals in the UK.

Dolphins and whales have also been spotted from the Farne Islands in recent years.

With so much wildlife to offer, it's not surprising that David Attenborough described the Farne Islands as his favourite nature spot in Britain.

The Inner Farne was the home of St Cuthbert, a monk and hermit born in AD687, known for his healing powers.

Grace Darling's famous rescue of survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1834 also took place on the Farne Islands.
