The Chicago Bears drafted Iowa State RB David Montgomery in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft in a move that required a trade with the Patriots to move from the 87th pick to the 73rd to secure his services.
Montgomery was considered a second-round talent and his slide into the third round sparked Ryan Pace’s aggressive move to go get him.
The trade cost the Bears a fifth-round selection this year and a fourth-rounder in 2020, a payment that suggests Montgomery will be given every chance to earn a starting job this summer.
Montgomery will bring elite contact balance to Chicago’s roster and a skill set as an inside-outside runner perfect for Matt Nagy’s style of play. He’s very similar (stylistically) to former Chief and current Brown, Kareem Hunt.
