Watch: Hero tackles Bondi Beach gunman and turns weapon on attacker in extraordinary footage

Extraordinary footage has emerged showing a hero tackling one of the Bondi Beach gunmen and turning his own weapon against him.

The verified video captures the moment a member of the public leapt from behind a parked car and grappled with the attacker from behind, wrestling the gun from his grip before forcing him to retreat.

The gunman was standing beneath a palm tree less than 50 metres from a pedestrian bridge where the two shooters had opened fire minutes earlier.

He was aiming and shooting in the opposite direction and failed to notice the man hiding behind the vehicle.

The member of the public rushed out and grabbed the gunman from behind. The pair struggled for the weapon and the gun went off again during the fight.

The hero then pushed the attacker to the ground and pointed the rifle back at him. The gunman retreated from the scene.

The brave rescuer immediately put the gun down and raised his hands—appearing to signal to police he was not one of the shooters.

On the nearby bridge, a second gunman continued firing. It is unclear who or what he was aiming at.

As the footage continues, an injured pedestrian can be seen fleeing the scene before a police officer arrives behind the attackers and opens fire.

Ten people were killed in the mass shooting on Sunday evening, including one of the two gunmen. The second shooter is in custody and injured.

At least 12 other people were wounded, with two police officers among those shot during the attack.

The massacre unfolded as crowds gathered for a Hanukkah celebration on the first day of the Jewish festival. Police have not yet confirmed whether the attack was connected to the event.

Officers have established an exclusion zone around the beach and deployed specialist bomb disposal teams to search for improvised explosive devices.
