Watch heart stopping moment Edinburgh driver swerves in front of cyclist

An Edinburgh cyclist has shared the moment a car came with inches of his bike as it undertook several cars in a bus lane.

The video, shared on Youtube, appears to show a red car crossing over a solid white line into the bus lane to undertake several other cars on the right.

From the video's timestamp, the incident appears to have taken place on 31 August just before 6pm in Abbeyhill near Meadowbank.

It comes as Police Scotland officers in Edinburgh took to the roads to catch drivers putting cyclists at risk.

Cops in Edinburgh took to social media to share how one motorist had been reported careless driving after pulling out in front of a cyclist.

The Roads Policing Unit had been in Corstorphine as part of Police Scotland's operation close pass.

As part of the campaign, an officer cycling in plain clothes with cameras will alert fellow officers if a car passes without enough room.

In a recent poll, Cycling Scotland found eight in ten Scottish motorists found it "frustrating" to overtake a cyclist, with over a third not leaving the 1.5 metre distance required.

Drivers could find themselves hit with three points and a £100 fixed penalty fine for the careless driving offence.

Chief Superintendent Louise Blakelock, Police Scotland head of road policing, said: “Since the coronavirus lockdown, we have seen an increase in the number of people using our roads for cycling.

“There is room for everyone and we encourage all road users to show consideration and respect for each other’s safety. We all have a duty to make our roads a safer place.”
