Watch hapless West Lothian driver get van and trailer stuck under railway bridge

A concerned resident in Winchburgh managed to capture the moment an unfortunate construction worker got themselves trapped under a bridge.

Matthew McIlwaine captured the footage of the trailer getting into a spot of bother on the B9080 as the vehicle was coming into Linlithgow from Winchburgh.

The incident is understood to have occurred shortly after 08:00am this morning and no one was believed to be hurt - well, aside from the driver's pride.

The van, which appears to be carrying plastic pipes in a rear trailer, attempts to go under a railway bridge but gets into a bit of bother when the pipes catch on the roof of the bridge.

In the video the driver can be heard revving and having a few attempts at forcing the piping under but to no avail.

They eventually retreats and reverses into safer surroundings.

On the incident, Matthew said: “It's a one way underpass for the first bridge and the van driver had a green light. It was clear the load was too tall but the driver persisted. They eventually gave up and made a u-turn. Several pieces of metal were sheared off his trailer.

“It was a very unsafe situation and the driver didn't have full control of the vehicle. It's very fortunate the load of gas piping didn't come loose and hit approaching vehicles.”
