Rookie Daniel Jones is winning over fans in New York, but veteran Eli Manning will be the Giants’ starter in Week 1 for the 15th consecutive season. Head coach Pat Shurmur announced Friday that the veteran will be the team’s QB 1 and that rookie Daniel Jones will be his backup.
“Eli’s our starter, and we’re getting Daniel ready to play. [Jones] has done a good job in the preseason,” Shurmur told reporters. “He’s getting better and he’s going to do continue to do that so that at whatever time we need him to play, he’ll be ready.”
The Giants drafted Jones sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
While the team finished last in the NFC East in 2018, Manning gave a respectable performance. Manning completed 380 of 567 pass attempts for 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season.
