WATCH: G League rules experiment will limit free throws to one attempt in an effort to reduce game length

The G League plans to experiment with a new free throw rule this season that aims to shorten the length of games. If the rule changes is deemed successful, it will become permanent at the G League level and could be implemented in the NBA.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe reported this Thursday, writing that the G League will implement a rule change which allows a player only one shot during any trip to the free throw line. The number of points that the shot counts for will be determined by the shot that was taking place when the foul was committed — the lone free throw shot could be worth one, two or three points according to Lowe’s article.

Brad Walker, head of basketball operations for the G League, told Lowe that the expectation is that this move will take six to eight minutes off of each game. The decision is part of a greater move to shorten the length of games to an average of less than two hours.
