Watch France score the first goal of the 2019 Women’s World Cup

France entered the 2019 under tremendous pressure to make a deep run in their home World Cup, and the hosts got off to a tremendous start in the opening match of the tournament on Friday.

France put the South Korean defense under pressure to open the game in front of a packed Parc des Princes stadium, and Eugénie Le Sommer scored the first goal of the World Cup just nine minutes into the game. French captain Amandine Henry dribbled to the endline and found Le Sommer arriving in the penalty area, and the forward smashed the ball off the underside of the crossbar.

France is a heavy favorite to top Group A, which also includes Nigeria and Norway. The United States women’s national team will take the field Tuesday against Thailand in Group F.
