WATCH: Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer reveals who the best high school quarterback he saw play is

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has seen a lot during his time on the recruiting trail. He’s even coached some of the best college quarterbacks during his time at Utah, Florida, and Ohio State. Some of the names you know, but they include Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett, and Dwayne Haskins.

But he’s seen even more when analyzing who he might want to go after to be a part of his offensive system, so he’s got plenty of options to choose from when you start throwing out the best he’s ever seen play.

Colin Cowherd had Meyer on his show Wednesday morning and began talking about how athletic Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes was in high school and touched on the benefits of multi-sport athletes. The conversation then turned to the best quarterback Meyer has ever seen play in high school, and you might be a little surprised by his answer.

Without much hesitation, Meyer singled-out not Tim Tebow, but former Ohio State Heisman finalist Dwayne Haskins.

“It was Dwayne Haskins,” said Meyer immediately. “Talk about pure ability to throw the football. When I went to his junior workout — right after his junior season — I was out there for two hours and watched this kid throw, and he was better than most college quarterbacks that I’ve ever had in my systems or coached. And he’s the one that I remember, I got in my car and I called whoever and I said ‘this one’s done, this one, he’ll be an NFL quarterback because he was so well developed in high school.'”

You can watch the entire exchange between Cowherd and Meyer below. These two actually have a pretty good chemistry and it’s interesting and fun to watch.

Haskins rise at Ohio State may be something we never see again. To jump into a starting role for just one year and blow away almost every single-season conference record, become a Heisman finalist, and a first-round NFL draft choice was simply unthought of and exceptional all at the same time.
