Watch: Former Chargers QB take brutal hit in AAF debut

Former Chargers quarterback Mike Bercovici didn’t quite see the field as an NFL player. Signing as an undrafted free agent in 2016 out of Arizona State University, Bercovici was slotted on the practice squad until 2017 when he was waived and later signed by the Cardinals.

Bercovici was fortunate to find a new home with the San Diego Fleet in the newly formed Alliance of American Football (AAF) league. But Bercovici’s debut wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

Bercovici took a monster hit from linebacker Shaan Washington of the San Antonio Commanders that sent the quarterback, the ball and his helmet flying in multiple directions. In the NFL, that type of hit would’ve likely been flagged and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Washington earn a suspension of some sort.

Bercovici was later benched in the third quarter of the game. To make things worse for the former Chargers QB, it was his 26th birthday.
